Youth in Local Government
The South Waikato District Council is committed to consulting with all of its communities, including youth. Council benefits through a better understanding of the issues and problems facing the youth in the district, if it involves them from the start. It was this thinking that led Council to introduce a South Waikato Youth Council. Nominations come from each of the district's three high schools, as well as Waiariki, Tirau Community Board, Arapuni Residents Association and the Mayor.
This year our youth councillors are Julius Daniels-Mata, Sinead White, Nadine More, Gideon Letoga, Stacey King, Hitro Ale, Jason Teklenburg, Katrina Van Lent, Richard Ball, Nick Totton, Taylah Kaponga and TeAonui McKenzie.
Every two years youth councillors together with a Council staff member or Councillor attend the National Youth Conference. The team also host a number of events during each year including Hu's Got Talent and the popular Top Town event.
